The University of Vienna is inviting applications for a funded doctoral position in the UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science (DoCS) as part of the STEM Call 2026. The position is linked to Prof. Sijia Xiao’s new group within Cooperative Systems, working across Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Responsible AI, and Social Computing. The research focus includes how people understand and respond to technological harm, and how organizations can build responsible AI into innovation processes. The project will use mixed methods, including qualitative and design-based approaches such as interviews and participatory design, as well as experiments and system building. The doctoral topic will be shaped around the candidate’s interests and strengths within these areas. Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, HCI, design, social sciences, or a related field. Strong written and spoken English is required. Prior research experience in HCI, Responsible AI, Social Computing, or related interdisciplinary work is desirable. This is a funded doctoral opening with a gross salary of EUR 3,776.10 per month on a full-time basis, paid 14 times per year. The employment duration is 4 years, initially limited to 1.5 years and extendable to 4 years under the stated conditions.
