PhD Opportunity at UNSW Sydney: Engineering Biomimetic Materials for Long-Lasting Heart Valve This post advertises a PhD opening in biomedical engineering focused on developing next-generation regenerative heart valve technologies. The project is based at UNSW Sydney and is led by Professor Jelena Rnjak-Kovacina as primary supervisor, with an international supervisory team including Professor Steven Wise (University of Sydney) and Professor Thomas Scheibel (University of Bayreuth, Germany). The research aims to create silk-based biomimetic materials that replicate the structure and mechanics of native heart valve tissue, with the goal of producing longer-lasting and more regenerative solutions for patients with heart valve disease. The opportunity is strongly aligned with biomaterials , tissue engineering , cardiovascular medicine , materials science , and translational research. Funding is highly attractive: the successful candidate will receive a $39,991 per annum stipend (2027 rate) for 3.5 years plus a $25,000 Global Mobility Grant . The project also includes an international research placement at the University of Bayreuth, which is described as a leading centre for recombinant spider silk research. Eligibility is stated for domestic PhD candidates , and the post says the opportunity would suit high-achieving graduates in biomedical engineering, medical science, biomaterials, materials science, tissue engineering, chemistry, biotechnology , or related disciplines.
