PhD in Epithelial Mechanobiology – Desmosomal Dysfunction and Plexin Regulation

Philipps-University Marburg, renowned for its rich academic tradition and award-winning teaching, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Epithelial Mechanobiology within the Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Pharmacology. The research group led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Worzfeld is seeking a motivated doctoral candidate to join a dynamic, international team and contribute to cutting-edge research on the molecular regulation of desmosomes in epithelial tissues. This project is part of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 425 “Desmosomal dysfunction in epithelial barriers” (DEFINE), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The research aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying desmosome regulation, focusing on plexins—a family of transmembrane receptors—and their role in health and disease, particularly in pemphigus, a severe autoimmune skin disorder. The work will involve a range of advanced techniques, including protein crosslinking, affinity purification, mass spectrometry, cultures of primary keratinocytes, skin organoids, mechanobiology methods, advanced imaging, and analyses of preclinical mouse models (FACS, histology). Applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in a Life Sciences subject and demonstrate high motivation, creativity, and team spirit. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required. Experience in biochemical methods, cellular and molecular biology, mechanobiology, advanced imaging, animal experiments, and histology is advantageous.
