About this position

17 fully funded PhD studentships are available through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria. These projects focus on health and social care research and are spread across partner universities in the North East and North Cumbria.

The collaboration brings together researchers and partners working on five themes: addressing inequity in health and care systems, care improvement and safety, prevention including multiple long-term conditions, supporting children, women, and family health, and workforce inclusion and innovation for impact.

Studentships are offered across five universities: Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, University of Sunderland, and Teesside University. The programme is interdisciplinary and designed for candidates interested in applied research that can improve health, wellbeing, and care delivery.

Funding includes 100% of UK home tuition fees, an annual stipend of £21,805 (2026–27 UKRI rate), and support for research costs, training, travel, conferences, and exchanges.

Eligibility varies by project, so applicants should check the individual advert for the specific studentship they want to apply for. The call welcomes applicants with a strong interest in applied health and social care research and encourages applications from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, neurodivergent conditions, people with long-term health requirements, and candidates of all genders, ages, and beliefs.

Deadline: applications open from 19 October 2026. Interview dates are in November and December 2026, and the start date is January 2027.
