About this position
The CSIRO Industry PhD Program (iPhD) at Queensland University of Technology offers a four-year research training opportunity focused on applied research that directly benefits industry by solving real-world challenges. This program aims to develop the next generation of innovation leaders equipped to work at the interface of research and industry in Australia. Successful candidates will be admitted to a university PhD program and supervised by QUT, CSIRO, and an industry partner.
The scholarship package includes approximately $48,000 per annum tax exempt (2026 rate) for four years, plus a project expense and development package starting from $13,000 per annum. Students will also participate in a 60-day industry engagement component and a structured professional development and training program to enhance applied research skills. Upon completion, students will receive a standard PhD.
The research project investigates delivery mechanisms for emerging livestock cattle feed supplements in extensive grazing systems. The expected outcomes include studying and improving supplement stability under various environmental conditions, exploring encapsulation options, developing slow-release technologies, and enhancing efficacy and water treatment technologies. The project addresses delivery system bottlenecks that hinder the adoption of methane-reducing supplements in extensive systems.
Applicants may have expertise in bioinformatics or molecular laboratory techniques. Bioinformatics candidates will generate and analyze complex microbiome sequence data, create inventories of microbial genomes, and identify metabolic features of keystone microorganisms driving rumen function. Molecular laboratory candidates will focus on high-throughput cultivation and characterization of core microbiota, design synthetic consortia, and utilize meta-omic technologies to characterize microbiota of interest.
Eligibility requirements include being an Australian citizen, Permanent Resident, or New Zealand citizen, meeting QUT PhD admission and English language requirements, not having previously completed a PhD, and being able to commence the program in the year of the offer. Full-time enrolment is required, though part-time arrangements may be considered. Applicants must be prepared to locate at approved project locations and comply with external enrolment procedures if necessary. Onboarding to CSIRO, including mandatory government background checks, is required.
To apply, email Professor Phil Pope with your academic and research background, motivation, and CV. If nominated, submit an expression of interest (EOI) to QUT, nominating Professor Phil Pope as your proposed principal supervisor and including the scholarship web page link in the financial details section. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview, and the preferred applicant will be instructed to formally apply to QUT. The application will be assessed against PhD admission criteria, and a letter of offer will be issued if all conditions are met.
This program provides a unique opportunity to engage in industry-relevant research, develop advanced skills in bioinformatics or molecular laboratory techniques, and contribute to innovations in livestock feed supplement delivery systems. The comprehensive funding package and industry engagement component ensure a well-supported and professionally enriching PhD experience.
