About this position

The Data61 PhD Scholarships at CSIRO offer outstanding postgraduate students the opportunity to advance their research careers in Australia's leading data and digital science environment. As part of CSIRO's Data61, scholars will join a world-class research community focused on developing digital and data solutions with real-world impact. The program is designed to foster top-quality doctoral students who will thrive in Australia's data-skilled workforce, providing access to tailored coaching, development programs, and a supportive, inclusive environment.

Scholarships are awarded in partnership with Australian universities, ensuring that students benefit from the guidance of both Data61 researchers and university supervisors. Research projects are aligned with Data61's strategic goals, and students are encouraged to collaborate closely with their teams to build a dynamic and impactful research career. The program is open to both domestic and international students, including those currently residing overseas who hold a valid visa to study in Australia.

Eligibility requirements include holding a first-class honours (H1) Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant research area, having applied for or being admitted to a PhD program at an Australian university (or having completed less than 12 months of PhD study at the start of the scholarship), and securing a university supervisor willing to oversee the research. Applicants must not already hold a PhD and should be ready to commence within the specified period. The selection process is competitive, and candidates are encouraged to apply for university admission before submitting a Data61 PhD scholarship application.

The scholarship provides a generous stipend of $42,000 per annum for the first two years, increasing to $44,000 from the third year, for a maximum term of 3.5 years. Students who already receive a university base stipend may apply for a top-up scholarship valued at $10,000 per annum. Additionally, up to $5,000 is available for learning and development expenses over the scholarship term. Continued funding is contingent on satisfactory academic progress and engagement with Data61, monitored through annual reviews involving both university and Data61 supervisors.

Applications are accepted exclusively through the CSIRO online recruitment portal when opportunities are open. Prospective applicants should regularly check the CSIRO Studentships and Scholarships website for updates and further details. Email applications are not accepted, and all submissions must comply with CSIRO's privacy policy. For more information, applicants are encouraged to consult the FAQs and contact the program only if their queries are not addressed online.
