About this position

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in artificial intelligence within the Department of Electronics-ICT, Faculty of Applied Engineering. The research will be conducted in the IDLab research group, which is part of imec and the University of Antwerp.

Imec is renowned as the world’s largest independent research and innovation centre for nanoelectronics and digital technology. The PhD project focuses on robust reinforcement learning (RL) for industrial control systems, aiming to enhance safety and efficiency in complex, nonlinear environments such as chemical plants and energy processes. The research seeks to combine the reliability of classical control methods with the adaptability of RL, developing controllers that learn from data while ensuring stable and safe operation. Validation will be performed on realistic industrial benchmarks to demonstrate improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability of critical operations.

The successful candidate will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, and contribute to teaching and research support tasks within IDLab. The position offers a dynamic and stimulating work environment at The Beacon and Campus Groenenborger.

The scholarship is initially for one year, renewable up to four years based on positive evaluations. The monthly stipend is set according to university rates and includes additional benefits such as ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, teleworking allowance, and commuting support. Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a master’s degree in Electronics-ICT, Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field, with excellent academic results and strong English communication skills. Teamwork, integrity, creativity, and alignment with the university’s educational and research policies are essential.

Prior high-impact publications are advantageous. Applications must be submitted online by November 17, 2025, with interviews scheduled for December 3 and 4, 2025.

The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, encouraging candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
