About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in Civil Engineering at the University of Galway, School of Engineering, within the Timber Engineering Research Group (TERG) and the BIOFABRICATE project. The project is focused on the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of engineered wood products using Irish timber and bio-based materials, with an emphasis on more sustainable construction solutions.
The research sits at the intersection of civil engineering, structural engineering, timber engineering, materials science, and sustainable construction. Project themes include mechanical characterisation of Irish timber species, development and testing of timber elements and assemblies, and application in the built environment in Ireland with consideration for deconstruction and reuse. The broader BIOFABRICATE programme also covers bio-based adhesives and coatings, material performance enhancement, and lifecycle assessment.
The position is supervised by Dr Patrick McGetrick, Associate Professor in Structural Engineering and Director of TERG. The project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and involves a strong academic–industry consortium, with access to state-of-the-art testing facilities at the University of Galway.
Funding is available for up to 4 years and includes a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per annum, EU tuition fees, and a budget for travel, consumables, and materials. This is a PhD scholarship rather than a postdoctoral or master’s opening.
Eligibility highlights include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with at least a 2.1 or equivalent in Civil, Structural, or Timber Engineering (or a closely related discipline), plus knowledge of structural design principles, technical report writing, and experimental testing of materials or structures. Strong analytical, communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills are also required.
The application deadline is 30 June 2026 at 17:00. To apply, send a single PDF containing a cover letter and CV to [email protected] with the subject line PhD Application – BIOFABRICATE.
