About this position

PhD scholarship opportunity in Building Engineering and Indoor Air Quality at the MeSSO Research Group, Faculty of Engineering, Munster Technological University (MTU), Cork, Ireland.

The project is part of the VENTURE project, funded by the SEAI RD&D Programme, and focuses on residential ventilation and healthy buildings. The successful candidate will work with Dr Paul O'Sullivan, Dr Adam O'Donovan, and Dr Theofanis Psomas to study the energy, carbon, health, and cost implications of ventilation systems in retrofitted Irish dwellings.

Research activities include laboratory experiments in MTU's ventilation test chamber, designing and building experimental rigs, developing calibration and measurement protocols, analyzing monitored field data from real homes, and applying statistical, data-driven, and system-identification modelling. The project also offers opportunities to prepare journal papers, conference outputs, and a thesis.

This is a fully funded 4-year full-time scholarship with a tax-free stipend of EUR 25,000 per year, full tuition fees, and support for conference attendance, research training, and travel.

Eligibility highlights: a First Class or Upper Second-Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Building Services, Energy, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline; strong understanding of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer; practical laboratory experience; strong quantitative skills; and strong English. Programming in Python, MATLAB, or R and a relevant Master's degree are desirable.

Start date is expected in January 2027. Application deadline: 30 October 2026.
