About this position
Adelaide University’s Future Industries Institute and Bioengineering group are offering a fully funded PhD project on fluorescent polymer probes for precision surgery. The project focuses on developing targeted near-infrared fluorescent probes for fluorescence-guided surgery, with applications in cancer and endometriosis.
The successful candidate will work on polymer-based formulations carrying fluorescent dyes, aiming to improve signal brightness, tissue targeting, and reduce self-quenching. The research combines biomedical engineering, polymer chemistry, nanomedicine, molecular imaging, oncology, and reproductive medicine. Probes will be evaluated using in vitro models, human tissues, preclinical models, and a clinical near-infrared laparoscopic imaging system.
This PhD offers a collaborative environment, access to state-of-the-art facilities, supervision support, and the chance to contribute to the clinical translation of molecular imaging technology developed by precision surgical oncology company Ferronova. Funding includes a tax-free stipend of AU$36,000 per year for 3.5 years, tuition fees for international students, consumables, and travel support.
Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field, and have relevant research experience. Interest in endometriosis, reproductive health, oncology, molecular imaging, and image-guided surgery is desirable. Experience in polymer synthesis, nanoparticle formulation, fluorescence imaging, cell culture, or preclinical research is advantageous but not required.
To apply, email an expression of interest to Dr Nicole Dmochowska with a CV and the names and contact details of three referees. The post notes that candidates should have recently passed an English language test. The location is Adelaide, Australia.
