About this position

Flinders University is advertising a PhD scholarship in the Biomedical Nanoengineering Laboratory within the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) for a project titled Nanoengineering a New Class of Biomaterials for Antibiotic Potentiation.

The project is multidisciplinary, with a primary focus on biomaterials science and a secondary focus on microbiology. The successful candidate will work on developing and characterizing novel biomaterials with modified surface properties (chemistry and topography) and evaluating how pathogenic microorganisms respond, including biofilm-forming bacteria and fungi. The lab is described as an internationally recognized, cross-disciplinary team spanning biomaterials, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, cell biology, microbiology, and plasma science.

The scholarship is supervised by Dr Andrew Hayles (NHMRC Emerging Leadership EL1 Fellow). The project also offers a 60-day industry-linked internship to strengthen translational research experience.

Funding includes a $36,061 per annum tax-free stipend (2026 rate) for 3.5 years, paid fortnightly. A Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship covers tuition fees for Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents. For overseas students, the supervisor will support applications for a tuition fee waiver.

Eligibility highlights include prior research output in biomaterials, chemical engineering, or a related field; preferably at least one Q1 journal publication; and PhD admission eligibility with an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A (or equivalent AQF Level 8 qualification) including at least 6 months of full-time research, or equivalent research experience such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or competitive grant involvement. Applicants should be available to commence full-time PhD study in Semester 1, 2027, with domestic students preferred but strong overseas candidates also considered.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
