About this position

PhD opportunity at University College London (UCL), Institute of Ophthalmology in genomics, human genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and ophthalmology.

This fully funded 3-year PhD studentship investigates the genetic causes of anophthalmia and microphthalmia, rare congenital eye disorders linked to childhood blindness. The project aims to increase the molecular diagnosis rate by identifying and validating new disease-causing genomic variants.

The successful student will work with a unique cohort of more than 250 genetically undiagnosed patients from the UK 100,000 Genomes Project. Research methods include whole-genome sequencing analysis, AI-assisted and bioinformatic variant interpretation, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, zebrafish functional studies, human retinal organoid culture, confocal microscopy, and molecular/histological techniques.

Training will span computational and experimental biology, including genome analysis, molecular genetics, developmental genetics, stem cell-derived organoid systems, and quantitative imaging. The project is hosted in the internationally recognised UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and involves collaboration with Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Hardcastle laboratory.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have or expect a minimum upper-second-class degree (2:1) or equivalent in a relevant life sciences subject such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, or Bioinformatics. A Master’s degree and/or prior lab-based research experience is essential. Strong English communication, analytical ability, and motivation for translational research are expected.

Funding: tuition fees, laboratory costs, and an annual stipend starting at GBP £22,000 are covered. UK students are fully eligible; international candidates may be considered for full overseas-fee funding through ISAD.
