About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Tasmania, Australia, on novel gene discovery for childhood cataract.
The project sits within a major research program on the genetics of inherited childhood cataract, using an extensive DNA repository from Australian families with multiple affected cases. The work aims to solve currently unexplained cases by identifying new cataract genes and variants.
Research methods include whole-genome sequencing, whole-exome sequencing, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Top candidate genes will be tested in zebrafish models and/or cell-based systems. The project can be tailored to the student’s interests.
Ideal applicants have a background in genetics or molecular biology, with an interest in data analysis and variant prioritization. Selection is competitive and based on academic merit and suitability.
Funding includes a living allowance stipend funded by an NHMRC Ideas Grant, plus a possible tuition fee offset for eligible international applicants after competitive assessment. An additional Menzies Grant Funded Top-up scholarship of $7,500 per annum for 3.5 years is also mentioned.
Location: Hobart. Closing date: 1 October 2026.
To apply, first check eligibility and citizenship requirements, then contact Professor Kathryn Burdon to discuss suitability. The application requires the project title, a signed supervisory support form, a CV with two referees, and a project research proposal.
