About this position
Fully funded PhD opportunity in Structural Biology, Computational Chemistry, and Protein Engineering at the University of Adelaide in Australia, in collaboration with Holocyte Pty Ltd and Neopuriph Pty Ltd.
The project sits at the intersection of biophysics, biotechnology, machine learning, and mathematical modelling, with a strong focus on computational structural biology, protein optimisation, and de novo enzyme design. Research themes include triggerable protein domains, artificial hydrogenases, enzyme catalysis, and software/platform development for scalable artificial protein design.
Funding is provided through the University of Adelaide Research Scholarship (UARS), covering tuition and supervisory fees, research and equipment expenses, and an annual living allowance of AUD 36,500 (indexed annually). Support is available for up to 4.5 years.
Two pathways are offered: a 4-year PhD for applicants with a Master’s degree, starting end-2026/early 2027, and a 5.5-year integrated PhD for applicants entering from undergraduate study, with rolling admission.
Eligibility highlights include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; strong academic performance; and background knowledge in mathematics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and computational science. Essential experience includes structural biology, homology modelling, ab initio molecular modelling, and basic neural networks/machine learning. Preferred skills include quantum chemistry, molecular physics, reaction kinetics, C/C++, Mathematica, programming, protein expression, molecular biology techniques, and bioinformatics.
Application materials requested: personal statement, official transcripts and degree certificates (provisional accepted for current students), recommendation letters, proof of English proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL), GRE scores for integrated applicants, and publications if applicable.
Deadline: 31 August 2026 for the 4-year PhD; integrated program is open until filled.
