Fully funded PhD opportunity in Sustainable Bio-Based Nanomaterials for Next-Generation Elastomer Technologies at Aston University, delivered through the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training in partnership with the University of Warwick and industry collaborator James Walker Ltd.

The project focuses on polymer science, materials science, chemical engineering, nanomaterials, and elastomer technology. You will develop and evaluate renewable biomass-derived nanofillers and multifunctional elastomer composites for advanced thermal management and engineering applications. The research aims to replace or enhance conventional carbon black and silica fillers with sustainable alternatives that improve thermal performance, durability, fatigue resistance, reliability, and industrial sustainability.

This doctoral project sits within the EPSRC and BBSRC-funded Net2Zero CDT, which trains researchers in negative emission technologies and broader net-zero solutions. The programme includes interdisciplinary training, access to cutting-edge facilities, networking with academia, government, and industry, and a three-month placement with an industrial, research, or policy partner.

Funding: fully funded four-year studentship, UKRI-rate tax-free stipend (£21,805 per year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a generous research training support grant.

Eligibility: applicants should hold or expect to obtain a First Class or high 2:1 honours degree and/or a Master's degree in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Interest in sustainable materials, polymers, nanomaterials, thermal management, or energy-related technologies is expected. Experience in synthesis, composites, characterisation, elastomer technology, or sustainable materials is helpful but not required. This opportunity is open only to home-fee candidates; international applicants are not considered.
