PhD opportunity in Sustainable Nanomaterials for Thermal Management of Industrial Systems at Aston University, delivered through the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training in partnership with the University of Warwick and James Walker Ltd.

This fully funded doctoral project focuses on biomass-derived nanomaterials from rice husk for phase-change thermal management applications. The research sits at the intersection of materials science, chemical engineering, polymer science, nanotechnology, and sustainable manufacturing, with a strong industrial decarbonisation and net-zero focus.

Research themes include sustainable thermal management materials, thermal energy storage, hybrid nanomaterials, materials characterisation, thermal stability, heat storage capability, durability, and heat transfer. The project aims to develop scalable materials that improve thermal performance, reliability, and energy efficiency in industrial systems.

Funding: four-year studentship, tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a generous research training support grant.

Eligibility: applicants should hold or expect to obtain a First Class or high 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) and/or a Master’s degree in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Interest in sustainable materials, polymers, nanomaterials, thermal management, or energy-related technologies is expected. Experience in synthesis, composites, characterisation, thermal analysis, or biomass valorisation is advantageous but not essential.

Location: University of Warwick / WMG, with collaboration across the Net2Zero CDT network. The opportunity is open only to candidates who qualify for home fees; international applicants will not be considered.
