About this position

PhD opportunity at The University of Queensland in sustainable manufacturing of composite bipolar plates for redox flow batteries.

This project sits within the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the School of Chemical Engineering at UQ. The research focuses on developing composite bipolar plates for redox flow batteries, with an emphasis on sustainable, cost-effective materials such as biomass carbon and recycled plastics, alongside new manufacturing methods to improve battery performance and durability.

The project is strongly connected to electrochemical energy storage, renewable energy storage, materials engineering, material chemistry, electrochemistry, and nanotechnology. It aims to support local value-added manufacturing in Australia while contributing to net-zero energy solutions and improved grid integration of renewable energy.

Funding: This is a fully funded PhD scholarship project under a Fellowship support scheme aligned with an Australian Government grant. The scholarship provides a tax-free living stipend of AUD 37,500 per year (2026 rate, indexed annually) and tuition fees covered.

Eligibility: The opportunity is for domestic candidates only. Applications are assessed competitively based on academic record, publication record, honours and awards, and employment history. A background in material engineering is expected, and knowledge of material chemistry, electrochemistry, nanotechnology, or electrochemical energy storage is highly desirable.

Application: Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the PhD program. You do not need to apply separately for the project or scholarship. In the EOI, indicate that you are applying for an advertised project, choose Fellowship project scholarship, and use scholarship code MANUFACTURING-LUO.

Timing: Candidates must commence no later than Research Quarter 3, 2027. Earlier start dates are possible, and the EOI closing date depends on the intended research quarter.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
