About this position

Maynooth University’s Department of Biology and Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research is advertising a fully funded PhD scholarship starting in January 2027.

The project is part of the ADDRESS collaborative research programme, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and coordinated by Prof Walsh at Maynooth University with partners across University College Dublin, Teagasc, and the University of Galway. The research sits within One Health and investigates antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across the animal-environment nexus.

The PhD topic is pre-specified and combines laboratory microbiology, bacteriology, genomics, and data analysis. Planned work includes assessing the evolutionary trajectories of sequenced AMR Enterobacterales across Irish One Health, running in vitro and freshwater mesocosm evolutionary experiments, and comparing bacterial evolution across experimental systems. Training will be provided.

Funding is strong: the award is fully funded for four years, with a €25,000 annual stipend, annual tuition fees covered, and support for research and travel costs.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold at least a first-class or 2.1 honours BSc in microbiology, molecular biology, or a related subject, or an MSc in a related field. Candidates should have bacteriology knowledge and an interest in genomics and microbiology experimentation; experience with bacterial genomic analysis and sequencing is desirable. Applicants must be resident in Ireland and available for full-time study at Maynooth University. Non-native English speakers must meet the university’s English language requirements.

Deadline: 5pm on 2026-11-06. Apply by email to [email protected] with the subject line “ADDRESS PhD”, including a cover letter/personal statement, CV, transcripts, and two referees.
