About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2027) project on climate change and ESKAPEE pathogen resistance. This is a competition-funded PhD opportunity for students worldwide, based in Subang Jaya, Malaysia.

The project uses a mixed-methods design to study how localised climate extremes—especially heatwaves and flooding—affect the prevalence and resistance profiles of ESKAPEE pathogens in a Malaysian hospital catchment area. The quantitative component will analyse retrospective clinical isolate datasets alongside local meteorological data using time-series modelling to identify correlations and lag effects. The qualitative component will involve semi-structured interviews with healthcare providers to understand operational vulnerabilities and behavioural drivers affecting the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programme during weather crises.

Academic interests aligned with this project include epidemiology, public health, medical science, environmental science, statistics, and sociology. The project bridges planetary health and infectious disease resistance, with a strong focus on climate-driven antimicrobial resistance in a real-world healthcare setting.

Eligibility notes: applicants must hold at least First Class Honours (H1) or an equivalent H1E qualification recognised by Monash Malaysia. The scholarship is competitive. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the main supervisor before applying and share their academic background and achievements for suitability assessment.

How to apply: submit an admission application to your preferred degree program and select the scholarship type during the process. No separate scholarship application is required.

Deadline shown on the listing: 31 January 2027.
