This fully funded doctoral opportunity focuses on sustainable lithium metal production, specifically an innovative solvent-route carbothermic reduction pathway for lithium oxide using a liquid metal solvent. The project is aimed at improving the environmental footprint of lithium metal manufacturing and supporting Australia’s critical minerals supply chain.
Research themes include: thermodynamics, thermodynamic modelling, high-temperature experimental rig design, solvent system selection, process performance evaluation, materials characterisation, and sustainable/low-emissions metal production. The work may also contribute to lithium and critical metal recycling and circular economy approaches.
What you will do: conduct a literature review; model suitable metal solvent systems and process conditions; design and build a high-temperature experimental setup; run experiments; analyse and refine the process; and contribute to journal publications and a PhD thesis.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours), or a Master’s degree. Preferred backgrounds include Process or Extractive Metallurgy, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Experience with high-temperature experiments, modelling software, strong communication skills, and industrial experience in process/metals industries are desirable.
Funding: 3.5 years of full-time scholarship funding with a possible 6-month extension, tuition fee waiver/scholarship for up to four years, thesis allowance up to $840, and relocation allowance up to $1,455 depending on eligibility.
