About this position
Fully funded PhD scholarship at Adelaide University to investigate causal relationships between the tumour extracellular matrix (ECM) and cancer outcomes.
This project is based in the Centre for Cancer Biology and connects with a highly collaborative environment across the Future Industries Institute and the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research, within the Adelaide BioMed Precinct in Adelaide, Australia.
The research examines how the ECM shapes tumour growth, local invasion, and metastatic spread. The project will investigate newly identified ECM proteins in cancer progression using laboratory models containing multiple cell types, use established and new nanofabrication protocols to build artificial tissue-like environments, and develop tissue-based markers that may help predict recurrence and spread from archived patient samples.
The overarching goal is to understand how ECM structure and mechanics influence cancer behaviour and whether this knowledge can support new strategies to combat metastasis and improve health outcomes. The project is well suited to applicants with interests in cancer biology, cell biology, biomaterials/materials science, and physical chemistry, especially those who want to work across biological and physical chemistry approaches.
Funding: 3.5 years of support is provided, including a stipend and tuition fees for international students, plus funding for research consumables and travel to international conferences.
