About this position

The High Performance Sport Industry PhD Scholarship at Murdoch University, in partnership with the WA Institute of Sport, offers a unique opportunity to advance research in elite female 3x3 basketball. This project aims to address significant gaps in the literature, which has historically focused on male or mixed-sex cohorts, by investigating the physiological, tactical, and fatigue-related determinants of performance in elite female athletes.

Through a series of integrated studies, the successful candidate will quantify the physical and technical–tactical demands of elite women’s 3x3 basketball competition. Comparative analyses will be conducted between female 3x3, male 3x3, and traditional female 5v5 formats, providing a comprehensive understanding of how condensed tournament schedules impact fatigue and recovery. The research will also identify key performance indicators that differentiate successful teams, such as shooting efficiency, tactical behaviours, and scoring strategies.

This scholarship is designed to establish the first evidence base describing the unique performance demands of elite female 3x3 basketball, with the goal of informing athlete preparation, coaching practice, and competition management within the rapidly expanding women’s game. The project will leverage advanced technologies including GPS/IMU systems, video analysis tools, and statistical programming to collect and interpret data.

The scholarship is valued at $42,000 AUD per annum for 3.5 years (total $147,000), providing a generous stipend to support living expenses. Both Australian and international students are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a research qualification such as Honours (class 2A or higher), a research Master’s degree, or equivalent, and demonstrate research training and academic preparation. Experience or strong interest in sport science, performance analysis, or a related field is essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-performance environment.

Applicants should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrate aptitude for data collection, analysis, and interpretation in sport. Familiarity with relevant technologies and statistical methods is highly desirable. Evidence of English proficiency is required for candidates from non-English speaking nations.

To apply, contact Dr Paul Goods with a cover letter outlining eligibility and suitability, a CV with at least two referees, academic transcripts, and evidence of English proficiency. Applications are open from 10 April 2026 and close on 15 June 2026. For further details and to submit your application, visit the Murdoch University scholarship portal.
