About this position

PhD opportunity: Dissecting the genetic architecture of anxiety subtypes at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Australia.

This project sits at the intersection of genetics, psychiatric genetics, statistical genetics, and psychology. It aims to identify genetic factors that contribute differently to anxiety subtypes such as generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorder, and to explore how these subtypes relate to each other and to other traits.

The research will use large-scale national and international genomic datasets and advanced methods including GWAS, polygenic risk scoring (PRS), and genetic correlation analyses. The student will investigate how genetic risk influences symptom patterns and possible links with treatment response, with the broader goal of improving biologically informed classification and targeted treatment strategies for anxiety disorders.

Supervisors: Dr Brittany Mitchell and Dr Anna Monistrol Mula.

Funding: Competition-funded PhD project with a funded living allowance scholarship and single cover OSHC insurance.

Eligibility: Open to students worldwide. Strong interest in quantitative genetics and data analysis is implied by the project methods.

Deadline: Sunday, 23 August 2026.
