About this position
FEUP (Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto) is offering 1 Master-level research grant within the AGRO-CIRN project, focused on Chemical Engineering and related areas. The work will be carried out at LEPABE – Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, under the supervision of Professor Vera Maria Ferreira da Cruz Homem.
The project investigates a radiation-based thermal treatment for disinfecting end-of-life substrates used in soilless culture systems. The research includes evaluating pathogen reduction in bacteria and fungi, assessing substrate quality and stability through physicochemical analyses (pH, electrical conductivity, water retention capacity, texture, organic matter characterization), and performing techno-economic and feasibility assessments for recycling, composting, decontamination, and disinfection processes. The grant holder will also contribute to dissemination activities, including scientific papers and project newsletter content.
Eligibility: applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program in Chemical and Biological Engineering or Environmental Engineering, or in a non-academic degree course integrated into a higher education project with R&D cooperation. A master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field is required. Foreign degrees must comply with Portuguese recognition procedures.
Funding: the grant provides a monthly stipend of 1,359.64 EUR, with an initial duration of 5 months and possible renewal until the project ends. The expected start date is October 2026.
Application deadline: 24 September 2026 at 23:59 Lisbon time. Applications must be submitted online via apply.up.pt with the reference LEPABE-AGROCIRN_MESTRE_2-BOLS-FEUP-26-32, together with a motivation letter, degree certificates, CV, the honor declaration, and any other relevant documents.
