About this position
The Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowships at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence are among the most competitive and prestigious postdoctoral opportunities in the historical, humanities, and social sciences. The programme is designed for researchers seeking a strong multidisciplinary environment, advanced training, and affiliation with leading academic departments and centres at one of Europe’s major social science institutions.
Applications are open for the 2027/28 entry. Fellows may be affiliated with one of the EUI’s four departments — Economics, History, Law, and Political and Political Sciences — or with the Robert Schuman Centre and the Florence School of Transnational Governance. The programme welcomes all areas and types of research within economics, history, law, and social and political sciences broadly defined.
Each year, around 40 new Max Weber Fellows join the EUI. The fellowship is fully funded and open to applicants from anywhere in the world. The programme also notes a number of dedicated grants for applicants from Greece, Japan, and Poland, subject to the specific conditions on the programme website. In addition, suitable applicants of any nationality may apply for an additional year at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, with one fellowship available.
Eligibility is geared toward early-career postdoctoral scholars. Applicants must be within five years of the award of their PhD. Preference is given to those who have recently completed the doctorate, have not previously held a postdoctoral position, and/or are on the academic or research-oriented job market. The programme has a strong record of helping fellows move into academic and research careers.
The deadline for applications is 16 October 2026 at 14:00 CEST, except for the Department of Economics. Interested candidates should apply through the EUI application portal and consult the programme website for full details, including grant-specific conditions and departmental affiliation options.
