MEXT Scholarship

Hokkaido University in Japan is advertising the MEXT Scholarship 2026 for international students interested in Master’s and PhD study. This is a fully funded opportunity under the Japanese government’s Monbukagakusho (MEXT) program, with support for tuition, stipend, airfare, and accommodation-related benefits.

The scholarship is open across a broad range of research areas, including Computer Science, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, and other science, engineering, and social science fields. Hokkaido University is a major research institution in Sapporo, known for strong graduate programs and international research opportunities.

Funding includes full tuition coverage, no application/admission/examination fee, a monthly stipend of ¥144,000 for Master’s students and ¥145,000–¥148,000 for PhD students, round-trip airfare to Japan, university dormitory/accommodation support, and health insurance support. Books and personal expenses are not covered.

Eligibility highlights include non-Japanese citizenship, being under 35 years old, holding a Bachelor’s degree for Master’s applicants or a Master’s degree for PhD applicants, and having a minimum GPA/CGPA of 2.3 out of 3.0 or equivalent. Applicants should also provide English language proof (TOEFL/IELTS) or Japanese language proof (JLPT), be physically and mentally healthy, and be willing to study full-time in Japan. For the university route, a research supervisor is required.

How to apply: choose the embassy or university route, prepare the required documents, and submit them through the relevant channel. If applying via the university route, first identify a supervisor. After submission, applicants may be invited for screening or interview before final MEXT selection.
