MS/PhD Assistantship in Flood Mapping at the University of Maine
The Simulation and Terrain-based River Elevation Advanced Mapping (STREAM) project is seeking graduate students for an MS/PhD assistantship focused on flood mapping, floodplain modeling, and hydrologic risk assessment in rural and low-population areas of Maine.
Students will develop mapped floodplains where detailed hydrologic and hydraulic studies have not yet been conducted, using high-resolution elevation data and advanced modeling techniques to calculate 100-year floodplain surfaces. The work builds on successful approaches used in other New England watersheds and includes community engagement, participatory research, outreach, facilitation of community meetings, and science communication.
The project is co-supervised by University of Maine faculty in the School of Wildlife Ecology and the School of Food and Agriculture, in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey Maine Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and scientists at the USGS New England Water Science Center.
Relevant study areas include environmental science, biology, geography, earth science, agriculture, GIS, hydrology, and socio-ecological systems. Applicants should have a B.S. in biology, agricultural sciences, or an equivalent field; Ph.D. applicants should preferably also hold an M.S. in a similar field. Field and laboratory experience are essential, and data management/GIS experience is desirable.
Funding is a paid assistantship with a minimum stipend of $28,000/year for MS students and $31,333.33/year for PhD students, plus partial medical and dental insurance support and tuition coverage for at least 13 credit hours. The assistantship is renewed annually based on funding and performance.
