About this position
FAPESP PhD Fellowship in Mineral Physics at the University of São Paulo (Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences, IAG-USP; partner: Polytechnic School, Poli-USP) for the project The Recent Archaeomagnetic and Paleomagnetic Field in the Southern Hemisphere – SHARP.
The fellowship is in Physics / Mineral Physics and focuses on developing machine learning interatomic potentials (MLPs) trained on Density Functional Theory (DFT) data for lower mantle solid solutions such as bridgmanite, post-perovskite, ferropericlase, and davemaoite. The work includes large-scale molecular dynamics, non-ideal mixing properties, anharmonic finite-temperature effects, and support for Bayesian inversion in the SHARP Thematic Project.
Funding: scholarship amount R$ 12,570.00, plus a 12-month Overseas Research Internship Fellowship (BEPE) at Columbia University.
Eligibility highlights: PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or related field completed or expected before the start date; experience with electronic structure calculations (e.g., VASP or Quantum ESPRESSO), molecular dynamics and/or interatomic potentials, Python and/or Fortran, and fluent English. Preferred: DeePMD-kit, NequIP/Allegro, cluster expansion/Monte Carlo, thermodynamic integration, elastic constants, high-pressure mineral physics, HPC, and publications.
Deadline: 15 August 2026. Location: São Paulo, Brazil.
How to apply: Email a single package containing CV, cover letter (max 1 page), PhD thesis or abstract, publication list, and two references with contact emails to joao.justo@usp.br. Use the subject line specified in the post and direct questions to the same email.
