About this position

The PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) at Monash University Malaysia offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in precision blood-cell biomarkers for early prediction of severe dengue. The project will establish a prospective dengue cohort at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), aiming to identify early blood-cell signatures that predict severe disease outcomes. Peripheral blood samples will be collected at first presentation, with PBMCs and plasma processed and cryopreserved at JCSMHS/UMMC. Fresh-blood immunophenotyping, including neutrophil analysis, will be performed in Kuala Lumpur, while cryopreserved samples will be sent to Melbourne for high-dimensional CyTOF and CITE-seq profiling.

Data generated from these advanced techniques will be integrated using machine learning approaches to develop a compact biomarker panel suitable for point-of-care diagnostics. The research is supported by LifeArc and a joint clinical, immunology, and bioinformatics team from Monash University Malaysia and Monash University Australia, ensuring a validated predictive signature and an industry-ready pipeline. This project is part of Monash University Malaysia’s Graduate Research Thematic Cluster, Predict-and-Prevent Severe Dengue: AI-Guided Multi-Omics & Natural-Compound Screening.

Ideal candidates will have prior experience in immunology and exposure to clinical or biobank-linked research, with competence in animal cell culture and core molecular biology techniques. Evidence of rigorous documentation, responsible data management, and clear scientific writing is expected. Familiarity with basic analysis in R/Python is preferred, and experience in omics-based data analysis is an added advantage. Training and cross-site co-supervision with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) will be provided, offering a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration and skill development.

The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS), funded by Monash University Malaysia, features regional mobility and is awarded to highly qualified students seeking to work on projects of regional and global relevance. Recipients of GEMS will be funded for an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (up to 9 months), and will have access to Monash University’s global network of research expertise and infrastructure during their candidature period.

To be eligible for GEMS, applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash University Malaysia and satisfy the English language requirements. The application process involves contacting the main supervisor with your academic background and achievements to determine your fit for the research topic. If you are a good fit, submit your application via the provided link, ensuring you select the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) and enter the same research topic as advertised. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2026.

This PhD position is ideal for candidates interested in translational research, biomarker discovery, and the application of machine learning in medical science. The project offers a unique blend of clinical, laboratory, and computational research, with opportunities for international mobility and collaboration across Monash’s global campuses.
