About this position
This PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia is offered under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) 2026, focusing on AI-driven extracellular vesicle and microRNA profiling for precision diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is notoriously difficult to diagnose early, with current methods relying on cognitive testing, neuroimaging, and invasive cerebrospinal fluid sampling. These approaches are often costly, time-consuming, and lack sensitivity during the earliest stages of disease, when intervention would be most effective.
The research project aims to overcome these limitations by applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to biomarker discovery and diagnosis. Blood samples will be analysed to isolate extracellular vesicles (EVs) and profile surface ligands and microRNAs (miRNAs). These molecular signatures will serve as biomarkers for ML models, enabling pattern recognition, classification, and prediction of disease progression. The goal is to distinguish Alzheimer’s from healthy states with high accuracy using non-invasive methods.
In parallel, large-scale EV and exosome datasets—including protein and miRNA cargo—will be examined to identify optimal ligand-cargo combinations and dosing strategies for therapeutic design. The computational framework will integrate clinical samples and ML to deliver a scalable platform for precision medicine in AD. This project is part of Monash University Malaysia’s Graduate Research Thematic Cluster, "From Biomarkers to Therapeutics: An Integrated Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)."
The ideal candidate should preferably be a Malaysian citizen and hold a First Class Honours (H1) degree or its equivalent (H1E) recognised by Monash University Malaysia. Relevant fields include Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science, Digital Health, Applied AI, or related disciplines. Preferred skills and experience include familiarity with machine learning model development, bioinformatics or willingness to learn pathway/network analysis tools, interest or experience in neurodegenerative disease models, and wet-lab skills. Candidates should be highly motivated, independent, able to work in a multidisciplinary team, and willing to contribute to publications, conference presentations, and grant applications. English language requirements must be satisfied.
The GEMS scholarship provides full funding, including tuition and stipend, and features regional mobility. Recipients will spend up to 9 months at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, gaining access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure. This immersive experience is designed for highly qualified students seeking to work on projects of regional and global relevance.
To apply, candidates are encouraged to first contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to determine suitability for the research topic. If a good fit is established, applications should be submitted via the provided link, selecting the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) and entering the correct research topic. The application submission guide outlines the requirements. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2026.
This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and therapeutics, leveraging AI, bioinformatics, and molecular biology within a globally connected academic environment.
