About this position
PhD opportunity in climate-driven flood risk assessment and adaptation of urban drainage systems in Northern Italy. The project is hosted at Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia in Pavia, Italy, and focuses on the Province of Monza and Brianza, a highly urbanized area exposed to pluvial flooding.
The research will assess how future climate projections may change the probability of extreme precipitation events and how those changes affect urban drainage systems. It builds on existing hydrological and hydraulic modelling based on historical data and extends it to future climate conditions by integrating projected changes in rainfall intensity and frequency.
The project also examines socio-economic impacts of flooding, including damage to buildings and infrastructure, disruption of services, and business interruption. A risk-based framework will be used to connect hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, with the aim of estimating expected annual losses and identifying system criticalities.
Another major component is the evaluation of adaptation strategies for urban drainage systems, including their effectiveness and benefits in reducing flood risk. The overall goal is to support risk-based design and decision-making for climate-resilient infrastructure planning.
Suggested background and skills: civil engineering, environmental engineering, hydrology, or related fields; hydrological and hydraulic modelling; data analysis; basic knowledge of climate projections; familiarity with GIS tools and programming (Python or MATLAB) is desirable. Interest in risk assessment and socio-economic impact analysis is expected. Good English is required, and Italian is an advantage for stakeholder interaction and data collection.
