About this position

PhD opportunity in Designed Protein Assemblies at the University of Leeds. This project sits in the School of Chemistry and focuses on protein design, protein overexpression and purification, protein assembly characterisation (including SAXS), and the development of protein-organised engineered materials.

The project is collaborative and involves Professor Michael Webb, Dr Johanna Galloway, and Dr Tim Moorsom, with links to the Bragg Centre for Materials Research and the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology. The student may also have opportunities for exchange visits and collaborative work with leading experts across multiple institutions.

Funding: one fully funded scholarship is available for a UK fee-status candidate. It covers UK tuition fees and a UKRI-matched maintenance stipend currently £21,805 per year for 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility: applicants must be eligible for Home (UK) fee status. The minimum academic requirement is normally a 2.1 honours bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, or a good Master’s-level performance in a related field. A first-class degree and/or a Master’s degree may strengthen competitiveness for scholarship funding. English language requirement: IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component, or equivalent.

Deadline: Monday 24 August 2026. The project start date is 1 October 2026.

How to apply: submit a formal research degree application via the University of Leeds website. Choose “Research Degrees – Research Postgraduate,” select “PhD Chemistry Full-time,” and indicate “Designed Protein Assemblies” with Michael Webb as proposed supervisor.
