About this position
ECOSOLUTIONS is recruiting for the third and final cohort of its Doctoral Focal Award (DFA): a fully funded PhD programme focused on chemical pollution, environmental protection, and systems-level solutions for non-toxic environments.
The programme is led by the Universities of Sheffield and York, together with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and brings together natural science, social science, engineering, policy, and societal engagement. Students will work on one of 19 PhD projects spanning environmental chemistry, ecology, data science, digital solutions, geography, psychology, environmental engineering, environmental economics, regulation, and law.
Research themes include chemical treatability and transformation, pollution risk management, ecological impacts of wildfire suppressants, antimicrobial resistance in fields, environmental risk assessment, behavioural change, sustainable agriculture, next-generation sensors, black carbon in landscapes, regenerative agriculture, consumer responses to future farming systems, and in-sewer chemical attenuation.
The award provides 3 years and 9 months of funding, including tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI recommended levels (£21,805 for 2026/2027, TBC for 2027/2028). The programme also includes induction, primer training, transferable skills workshops, systems-solutions workshops, a three-month placement with a non-academic partner, and opportunities to attend international conferences.
Eligibility: applicants need at least an upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. The programme welcomes applicants from across the world, but funding rules apply: York and UKCEH-led projects are limited to UK/Home fee status applicants, while Sheffield-led projects can accept both UK/Home and international applicants with very limited places for international students.
Deadline for applications is 30 November 2026. Applicants should use the online application form and review the individual project links to identify the best-fit PhD project. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview.
