About this position

Ghent University is offering Special Research Fund (BOF) PhD sandwich scholarships for candidates from selected Global South countries. This is a doctoral opportunity for students who want to complete a joint PhD with research split between Ghent University in Belgium and a partner university or research center in the Global South.

The call is open to all research fields, with preference for projects that are relevant in the South-North context. The scholarship supports 24 months of research at Ghent University, while the remaining 24 months must be funded by the partner institution in the Global South. Co-funding is mandatory.

Applicants must be nationals of one of the selected Global South countries and must be at the beginning of their PhD. Exchange students are not eligible. At the start of the fellowship on 1 October 2027, at least 36 months of doctoral research must still be required to complete the PhD. A Ghent University professor must agree to supervise the project, and a local supervisor at the partner institution is also required.

The partner institution must provide a written statement confirming a full-time scholarship or salary for the 24 months spent in the Global South and sufficient exemption from teaching or other duties. The mobility scheme normally requires the student to begin and end with a research stay at Ghent University, with at least 24 months of locally funded research in between. Exceptions may be requested by 15 January 2027.

Funding includes the Ghent University scholarship period, a bench fee of €310 per month of research in Ghent for the promoter, and an €8,000 travel budget to support operational and travel costs. Applications must be submitted electronically in English to [email protected]. The application deadline is 9 February 2027.

Research areas are not restricted, so applicants from fields such as biology, environmental science, computer science, public health, economics, chemistry, and related disciplines may be relevant depending on the project. This is a strong fit for candidates seeking a funded PhD with international supervision and mobility between Belgium and the Global South.
