About this position
PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia in the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) programme.
The project focuses on molecular dynamics (MD), QSAR modelling, and natural-compound screening for dengue antivirals. The research will build a streamlined in-silico pipeline to prioritise plant-derived and pharmacopeial compounds, dock them against dengue and host targets, evaluate binding stability and free energy, and train QSAR models using antiviral datasets. Outputs include curated libraries, reproducible code, QSAR models, and a ranked list of candidate compounds for wet-lab validation.
Relevant study areas include bioinformatics, virology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, genomics, and medical statistics. The project sits within Monash University Malaysia’s thematic cluster on predicting and preventing severe dengue through AI-guided multi-omics and natural-compound screening.
The ideal candidate should have a First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent and meet the university’s English language requirements. Preferred experience includes molecular virology, animal cell culture, standard molecular biology assays for antiviral testing, strong experimental design, and careful data handling. Background in immunology and omics-based data analysis is an advantage.
Funding: GEMS is funded by Monash University Malaysia and includes regional mobility support for an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, plus access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure.
How to apply: Contact Dr Kooi Yeong Khaw first with your academic background and achievements to assess fit. If suitable, submit your application via the GEMS application process and select the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS). Follow the application submission guide provided on the project page.
Location: Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
