About this position
PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia in the project Cross-Regional Mechanisms in Schizophrenia & ASD via Multi-omics in Patient-Derived hiPSC Models, part of the GEMS 2026 scholarship scheme and the MAP-Neuro thematic cluster.
This project uses patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines from ethnically diverse Malaysian donors, matched controls, and Australian cohorts to study neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disease mechanisms. The research combines cortical neuron and organoid differentiation with genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, high-content imaging, and integrated multi-omics analysis to identify disease modules, shared vs population-specific features, and candidate biomarkers.
Research interests and study keywords include neuroscience, bioinformatics, cell biology, molecular biology, neurology, neuropsychology, pharmacology, physiology, tissue engineering, and AI-enabled data analysis. The work bridges wet-lab and computational research and is aimed at human-relevant, equitable mental health research with translational relevance for schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The ideal candidate has a strong background in neuroscience, stem cell biology, or bioinformatics, plus hands-on experience in cell culture, molecular techniques, or imaging. Preferred degrees include neuroscience, biotechnology, biomedical science, or bioinformatics. Applicants should also be motivated to learn integrative omics analysis and work collaboratively across Malaysia and Australia.
This is a competition-funded PhD project. GEMS funding supports regional mobility, including an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, with access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure.
To apply, first contact the main supervisor, Assoc. Professor Satoshi Ogawa, with your academic background and achievements to assess fit. If suitable, submit your application through the project/application link and make sure you select the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) and enter the same research topic title as advertised.
