About this position
PhD opportunity at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom on predicting acid sulfate soils for safer restoration and land management. The project sits at the intersection of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Statistics, and Computer Science, with strong emphasis on soil science, GIS, predictive mapping, machine learning, and soil biogeochemistry.
The research investigates how reliably existing soil information predicts acid sulfate soil occurrence in the UK, and whether land management history improves predictions of acidification responses. It focuses on agricultural peatlands and coastal wetland restoration sites, where drainage, excavation, drought, and rewetting can mobilise acidity and metals and affect aquatic ecosystems, agricultural productivity, and restoration outcomes.
The project is funded through the NERC-funded CENTA Doctoral Training Partnership and Cranfield University. Funding includes a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (up to £21,805) and Home-rate tuition fees for 3.5 years. The studentship is open to Home and international applicants, but international students must cover the fee difference from another source; no international fee waiver is available.
Applicants should have a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline such as soil science, environmental science, geography, geology, earth science, ecology, or hydrology. Interest in fieldwork, laboratory investigation, environmental data, GIS, and predictive modelling is welcome. Previous experience in soil classification, acid sulfate soils, programming, or spatial modelling is helpful but not required.
To apply, complete the online Cranfield University application and upload the mandatory CENTA Studentship Application Form 2027 along with your CV and all required documents. The deadline shown is 5 January 2027 / 6 January 2027 depending on the source page, so applicants should verify the official vacancy page and submit early. For questions, contact Dr Dan Evans at [email protected].
