About this position
PhD opportunity at Monash University Malaysia in the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) scheme.
This project is titled “Tumour-microplastic interaction and their role in tumour growth kinetics” and sits within Monash University Malaysia’s Graduate Research Thematic Cluster on Integrated Strategies in Microplastics Research. The research explores how microplastics in the tumour microenvironment may accumulate, alter mechanical properties, and influence tumour growth and microplastic translocation. The project uses a combined in vitro and in silico approach, with relevance to biomechanics, biomedical engineering, biophysics, cancer biology, cell biology, fluid mechanics, mathematical modelling, mechanical engineering, and solid mechanics.
The supervisor is Assoc. Professor Ean Hin Ooi at Monash University Malaysia in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The post is aimed at candidates with a background in mechanical engineering or a related discipline. Experience in microfluidics, 3D printing, and/or computational mechanics is preferred. Applicants should also be able to work well in a team and communicate research findings to collaborators from different backgrounds.
This is a funded PhD under GEMS. Funding notes state that recipients will be supported for an immersive year in Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, with access to Monash’s global research network and infrastructure during candidature.
To apply, first contact the main supervisor with your academic background and achievements to confirm fit. If suitable, submit your application through the GEMS application process and ensure you select the same research topic as advertised. Applicants must meet the GEMS eligibility requirement of First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia and satisfy the English language requirements.
