About this position

Monash University Malaysia is advertising a PhD Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) project on synergistic acoustic-electrostatic-inertial separation of microplastics from blood. The research sits within the Graduate Research Thematic Cluster Integrated Strategies in Microplastics Research and is based at Monash University Malaysia in Subang Jaya, Malaysia.

The project explores clinically relevant methods to isolate microplastics from blood, addressing health risks such as thrombosis, endothelial dysfunction, cardiovascular disease progression, and systemic inflammation. The proposed work combines surface acoustic waves (SAW), functionalised surfaces leveraging electromechanical properties of microplastics, and hydrodynamic/inertial forces based on particle size and mass differences. The outcome may contribute to device development for biomedical and clinical separation applications.

This is a funded PhD opportunity for students worldwide. The scholarship is part of the GEMS programme and includes regional mobility support, with an immersive year at Monash University Australia, Monash University Indonesia, or the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay for up to 9 months, plus access to Monash’s global research expertise and infrastructure.

Applicants should have a background in mechanical engineering or a related discipline. Priority will be given to candidates with experience in SAW and interdigital transducers, 3D printing, microfluidics, and/or acoustics. Strong teamwork and the ability to communicate across disciplines are also important. Eligibility requires First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meeting the English language requirements.

To apply, first contact Dr Ajay Achath Mohanan with your academic background and achievements to confirm fit. If suitable, submit your application through the GEMS application process and ensure the same research topic is selected. The post does not state a fixed deadline.
