About this position
PhD opportunities in Rock Mechanics at The University of Newcastle, Australia. Two PhD scholarships are available for domestic and international students in a research group working on rock mechanics, rock mass stability, discontinuity behaviour, and shear strength.
Project 1: Non-persistent discontinuities and rock bridges. This project focuses on the influence of discontinuity non-persistence and the contribution of rock bridges to rock mass stability, with a primarily numerical modelling and analysis approach.
Project 2: Water flow, discontinuity mismatching, and shear strength. This project examines fluid flow through rock discontinuities and the effects of discontinuity mismatching on shear strength, combining experimental investigations with numerical modelling.
The group has developed a novel approach for predicting the shear strength of large in situ rock discontinuities (StADSS), combining a semi-analytical shear strength model with a random field model and validated through laboratory testing and field applications. The advertised projects extend this work to more realistic discontinuity conditions.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have an excellent academic record and preferably a master's degree with a research component. Experience in experimental and/or numerical methods is highly desirable, together with strong written communication and presentation skills. Applicants must meet the minimum admission criteria.
Funding: The scholarship provides a living allowance of $38,938 per annum (2026 rate), indexed annually, for 3.5 years, plus tuition fee scholarship and up to $1,500 relocation allowance.
How to apply: Email your expression of interest to Olivier Buzzi with scanned transcripts, CV, a brief statement of research interests, and a proposal linked to the project. Applications close on 31 August 2026 at 5pm.
