About this position
PhD Position in Diet–Microbiome–Metabolome Interactions at the DTU National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark, in Denmark.
This 3-year PhD project sits at the intersection of microbiology, nutrition, gut microbiome, metabolomics, and food analysis. The research aims to uncover how dietary components shape the functional capacity and metabolic output of the gut microbiome, with the broader goal of informing personalized nutrition and healthier dietary recommendations.
The project is a collaboration between the Research group for Gut, Microbes, and Health and the Research Group for Nutrition, Sustainability and Health Promotion. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, international research environment and contribute to teaching Bachelor’s and Master’s students as well as departmental activities.
Research focus: gut microbiome function, microbial metabolites, bacterial physiology, dietary effects on microbial communities, sequence-based analysis, and omics approaches such as 16S sequencing, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics.
Eligibility highlights: a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required. The ideal candidate has a background in microbiology, strong interest in gut microbiome and nutrition, good English skills, and experience with microbiology/molecular biology techniques. Experience with aerobic and anaerobic cultivation, bacterial physiology, and omics technologies is an advantage.
Funding and terms: this is a 3-year PhD scholarship/position with salary and appointment terms according to the Danish collective agreement. The position is full-time and expected to start on 1 January 2027, or by mutual agreement.
