This PhD scholarship at Sheffield Hallam University offers an exciting opportunity to develop a framework supporting job-related fitness among South Yorkshire Police officers. The position is based within the School of Sport and Physical Activity and the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC), a world-leading hub for health innovation. The scholarship is fully funded for Home students, covering tuition fees and providing a stipend at the Living Wage Foundation rate (£22,152 for 2025/26), with annual increases. International applicants are welcome but must cover the fee gap between Home and International tuition rates.

The research project aims to address the efficacy of current job-related fitness testing procedures for police officers, their engagement with physical training, perceptions of testing methods, and the support they receive from the police service. By collaborating with South Yorkshire Police, the successful candidate will co-produce and evaluate a support framework that could influence regional and national police practices. The project is interdisciplinary, combining applied exercise sciences, physiology, psychology, and health research, and will involve both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Applicants should have a 1st class or 2:1 degree in Sport Science, Data Science, Biomedical Science, Engineering, or related fields. Quantitative skills are desirable, and training in specialist methods will be provided. Strong communication skills and a desire to work in an interdisciplinary team, including police service members, are essential. All applicants must meet the English language requirement (IELTS 7 or equivalent, with at least 6.5 in all test areas, taken within the last two years) unless exempt.
