About this position

University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship holder position in the Department of Construction Engineering, Faculty of Applied Engineering, for research on asphalt pavement technologies, interfacial bonding, and the multiscale behaviour of recycled asphalt pavement within the DreamPave project.

The PhD will investigate how blending zones between aged and virgin binders influence stiffness, strength, and durability in recycled asphalt mixtures. The work combines chemical and rheological characterization, microscopy, interfacial mechanical testing, data analysis, and molecular dynamics simulation-supported interpretation. The project also examines RAP content, rejuvenator chemistry, mixing, ageing, and climate-specific durability, with the goal of contributing to performance-based design guidelines.

The position is embedded in an international Belgium-Vietnam collaboration with the University of Transport and Communications in Vietnam. The doctoral researcher will collaborate on laboratory testing, multiscale modelling, durability validation, project meetings, dissemination activities, and may undertake research stays in Vietnam.

Applicants should have, or soon obtain, a master degree in civil engineering, materials science/engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Strong academic results, a clear interest in scientific research, good English, and preferably experience with asphalt/bitumen materials, rheology, microscopy, chemical characterization, debonding tests, Python/MATLAB, image/data analysis, or molecular dynamics are expected.

The scholarship is initially for one year and may be renewed up to four years after positive evaluation. The planned start date is 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible after that date. Applications must be submitted online by 30 September 2026, including a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and transcripts.
