About this position

DTU Construct at the Technical University of Denmark is offering a PhD scholarship in Digital Platform-based Micromanufacturing System, within the Section of Engineering Design and Manufacturing Systems in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. The position is part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network MicroMan4Health, a research collaboration focused on data-centric micromanufacturing platforms for healthcare applications.

The PhD project sits at the intersection of manufacturing engineering, industrial AI, software platforms, and data-centric production systems. The successful candidate will develop an open digital platform for micromanufacturing, including a secure and scalable data lake that integrates heterogeneous production data. The platform will support plug-and-play AI microservices for predictive maintenance, process monitoring, and real-time analytics, and will be validated on open-architecture metal powder bed fusion systems.

This opportunity is especially relevant to candidates interested in digital manufacturing, Industry 4.0, cyber-physical production systems, smart manufacturing, data engineering, and machine learning for manufacturing. The project emphasizes building interoperable, scalable digital infrastructure that turns multimodal manufacturing data into actionable intelligence. The research will contribute to next-generation intelligent micromanufacturing systems with potential impact in health-sector manufacturing.

The position is hosted at DTU, Denmark, and offers a 3-year full-time PhD appointment. The scholarship is funded through the MSCA Doctoral Network, with salary under the Danish collective agreement and DTU salary structure. The post is subject to the MSCA mobility rule: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months during the 36 months before recruitment, and applicants must be doctoral candidates without a PhD degree.

Eligibility requires a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline at an equivalent academic level. Strong programming skills, especially in Python or similar languages, along with knowledge of data integration, databases, machine learning, analytics, and manufacturing data acquisition are highly relevant. Experience with industrial sensors, production monitoring, and quality assurance will be an advantage.

The application deadline is 30 September 2026 at 23:59 Danish time. Applicants must submit one PDF via the online application portal containing a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, BSc and MSc diplomas, copies of BSc and MSc theses, and any scientific articles. The department invites applications from all qualified candidates and notes that the selected candidate will be enrolled in one of DTU’s PhD programmes.

Supervision and assessment involve Senior Researcher Matteo Calaon, Associate Professor Guido Tosello, and Dr. Musa Mulla (industrial partner). Further information is available through DTU Construct and the project-related academic contact page.
