About this position

PhD scholarship in “Epitaxial Si-based materials for the deep nanoscale” at Johannes Kepler University Linz, Semiconductor Physics Division, Austria.

This PhD project is part of the EU-funded QUEST Doctoral Network under Horizon Europe / Marie Skłodowska-Curie support. The network brings together 15 PhD researchers working across leading European universities, research facilities, and innovative companies on deep nanoscale physics, covering material fabrication, measurements, and theory/simulations.

The successful candidate will join the research group of Prof. Moritz Brehm at JKU Linz and work on novel group-IV materials for nanoelectronics, silicon photonics, and quantum photonics, with a focus on epitaxial formation and characterization. The project includes secondments of about two months each at Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (Germany) and DTU (Denmark), plus regular QUEST network meetings, training schools, and workshops.

Applicants should have a recognized master’s degree in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering. The post specifies basic knowledge of semiconductor and solid-state physics, quantum physics including low-dimensional systems, and semiconductor technology. Strong English communication, scientific writing, and presentation skills are required. Helpful experience includes MBE, thin-film deposition, and characterization methods such as AFM, XRD, and PL. The group values curiosity, a strong work ethic, team spirit, and willingness to learn; training on specialist equipment will be provided.

Mobility rule: because this is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie position, applicants must not have spent more than 12 months in Austria during the 36 months before recruitment.

Application deadline: 1 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Vienna).

How to apply: Email your application to [email protected]. A JKU job details PDF is available for further information.

What's required

Applicants must have a recognized university master’s degree in physics, materials science, or electrical engineering. Due to Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rules, the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Austria for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before recruitment. Required skills include basic knowledge of semiconductor and solid-state physics, quantum physics including low-dimensional systems, and semiconductor technology, along with excellent written and spoken English and strong scientific writing and presentation skills. Advantageous experience includes thin-film deposition techniques, materials characterization such as XRD, AFM and/or PL, and familiarity with cleanroom environments, vacuum systems, and laboratory safety protocols. The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, reliable, tenacious, prudent, responsible, a strong team player, and a fast learner eager to acquire new experimental skills.
