About this position
PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Injury Prevention Amongst Migrants in Australia
The George Institute for Global Health, Injury Research Division, UNSW Sydney, is advertising a full-time PhD scholarship opportunity focused on injury prevention, migration and health, and health equity in Australia. The project will explore the intersections of injury and migration among migrant communities, with the aim of identifying patterns, priorities, and modifiable risk factors that can inform culturally responsive policy and practice.
The research is intentionally broad and may use both qualitative and quantitative methods. Possible directions include community-engaged research, lived experience, risk perception, barriers to prevention, outcomes after injury, and analysis of available data or data linkage to characterise injury patterns and prevention opportunities. The successful candidate will have scope to help shape the project’s focus, questions, and methods according to their interests, skills, and disciplinary background.
Supervision is provided by Associate Professor Jagnoor Jagnoor and Dr Ryan Essex at The George Institute for Global Health, UNSW Sydney.
Applicants should have a strong interest in injury prevention, health systems, migration, and health equity. The post seeks candidates with excellent communication skills, evidence of scientific writing and peer-reviewed publications, the ability to work independently, and a collaborative mindset. Experience in public health, injury prevention, or work with migrant or culturally and linguistically diverse communities is an advantage. Prior mixed methods, data linkage, and publishing experience are highly regarded.
Eligibility requires a relevant first- or second-class Honours degree or a Masters degree with a substantial research component, or equivalent research experience. Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents are eligible to apply.
Funding is linked to a Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, with support to apply for a UNSW main round scholarship. If a full scholarship is not secured, an internal living allowance stipend of $39,991 per annum (2026 rate, plus indexation) is available for up to 3.5 years.
Applications should include a cover letter, CV, transcripts, proof of citizenship or permanent residency, and at least two referees. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and the advert may close early if a suitable candidate is found.
Deadline: Friday 14 August 2026.
