About this position

University of Southern Queensland (Australia) is offering an HDR/PhD scholarship in physics-informed and explainable AI for water security. The project focuses on uncertainty-aware modelling from multisource environmental observations, combining in-situ water-quality measurements, flow data, hyperspectral reflectance, and satellite imagery (including Sentinel and Landsat) accessed through CSIRO’s EASI environment.

The research uses real-world CSIRO Aqua-Watch pilots and Hunter Water Corporation data, with the Williams River catchment and Grahamstown Dam as primary testbeds. The student will work across environmental modelling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, hydrology, physics-based modelling, statistics, remote sensing, geospatial data, and Python/scientific computing.

This is an industry-linked PhD with joint supervision from the university, CSIRO, and industry partners. The scholarship includes a living stipend plus project expense and development funding, along with structured professional development and an industry engagement component of at least 60 full-time days.

Eligibility is restricted to Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents. Applicants must meet UniSQ PhD admission and English language requirements, hold an appropriate honours/master’s degree or equivalent research experience, have not previously completed a PhD, and not hold another primary scholarship. The student must be able to commence in 2027 and enrol full-time.

To apply, prepare a CV, a preliminary research thesis topic proposal, and transcripts/qualification documents, then submit via the UniSQ Scholarship Application Management System by 20 November 2026. For project details, contact Professor Ravinesh Deo at [email protected].
