About this position

Sheffield Hallam University is advertising a funded PhD scholarship in Architecture, Built Environment, and urban governance/spatial practice focused on Public Practice and the changing role of local government in shaping places and the public good.

The project, titled Transforming Lives PHD Scholarship Public Practice: Infrastructures and capacities for spatial practice within the changing local state, examines how placemaking capacity has been eroded within local authorities and what this means for democratic, spatial, and imaginative forms of public-sector action. It is developed in collaboration with Public Practice, a not-for-profit organisation that builds public sector capability to improve the quality, equality, and sustainability of places.

Research themes include municipal design, local government architecture, progressive urban governance, feminist municipalism, radical municipalism, institutional change, and climate justice. The doctoral researcher will be embedded within Public Practice and will have access to its archive, practitioner networks, and case studies. Methods may include archival research, qualitative inquiry, institutional ethnography, mapping, participatory inquiry, and critical spatial practice.

The scholarship is suitable for candidates interested in architecture, urban planning, civic practice, and the social role of public institutions. The project is based in Sheffield, United Kingdom, and is offered as a 3.5-year full-time funded PhD (or part-time equivalent). Funding covers home tuition fees and includes an annual stipend at the Living Wage Foundation rate. International students may need to cover the fee difference.

Eligibility highlights include a strong relevant undergraduate degree (2.1 minimum), a relevant master's degree (merit minimum), and English language proficiency for international applicants. The application requires a research proposal, personal statement, transcripts, referee details, and passport/visa documents. Deadline: 2 November 2026, 17:00 UK time.
