About this position
PhD scholarship at Copenhagen Business School in the Department of Accounting focusing on Public Sector Management Accounting and Control. This is a three-year PhD position in a strong and established accounting research environment with interests in financial accounting, management accounting and control, auditing, and corporate governance.
The project should address how management accounting and control practices shape public sector organizations at state, regional, and/or municipal level. Relevant topics include performance measurement and management for public value, the influence of new technologies on accounting and control practices, the use of financial and non-financial information by public officials and politicians, budgeting for public-sector decision-making, and the role of accounting in strategic development and public organization management. The department welcomes a range of methodologies and theoretical approaches, with particular interest in studies of organizational practices.
The PhD candidate will join the department’s management accounting research group and is expected to contribute to teaching in management and control. Because many courses are taught in Danish, applicants with Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian language skills are especially encouraged. The position is open to candidates from different academic backgrounds, both within and outside business administration.
Admission is competitive. Applicants must hold a master’s degree, have strong grades, and meet CBS’s detailed academic requirements, including high performance on the master’s thesis and GPA thresholds or equivalent class-ranking documentation. Strong academic English skills are required. The application must include a five-page project description, CV, transcripts, diplomas, publication list if relevant, and a writing sample.
Funding is provided through a fully salaried CBS PhD scholarship. The scholarship runs for three years and includes tuition fees, office space, course and travel costs, and teaching obligations corresponding to 416 hours. The monthly salary is approximately DKK 30,264 to DKK 36,877 plus pension contributions.
Deadline for applications: 11 November 2026. The position is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Copenhagen Business School.
