About this position

PhD Scholarship in Rural Healthcare and Intellectual Disability at The University of Notre Dame Australia (School of Medicine, Sydney campus).

This is a full-time PhD scholarship supporting a mixed-methods research project on the healthcare needs of rural and regional people with intellectual disability as they age. The project sits within an established research group and is embedded in a co-designed, participatory approach involving disability researchers, other PhD candidates, disability support organisations, and people with lived experience.

The research component is part of an MRFF-funded project examining polypharmacy in older adults with intellectual disability. The successful candidate will contribute to quantitative survey analysis and follow-up interviews with older adults with intellectual disability and their carers across regional and rural Australia, with findings informing the development and evaluation of a nurse-led intervention.

Funding: budgeted stipend of $42,440 for 3 years (not indexed annually). Standard candidature is 3 years full-time; if an extension is approved, the stipend is not extended.

Eligibility: domestic students only. Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with Honours (First Class or Upper Second Class) or a Masters by Research in a relevant healthcare field, and be based in Sydney. The applicant does not need to be on site.

Deadline: submit your EOI by 13 November 2026. Preference is to commence in Semester 1, 2027.

How to apply: prepare transcripts/certificates, a research proposal, two letters of recommendation, a CV/resume, and any additional supporting documents. Use the job page to apply and direct topic enquiries to Dr Giselle Gallego.
